Overview

The Jack-O-Lantern is a craftable decorative lighting item that can be held or placed to provide light. It can also be purchased from Pierre’s booth at the Spirit’s Eve festival, and the recipe is sold there as well. When placed, it affects a radius of about 1 tile with dim light. It can be placed indoors or outdoors, and it can even be used in areas such as the Mines.

Unlike braziers, which can be toggled on and off, the Jack-O-Lantern is always lit. It provides the least light of any craftable lighting source, and the light it gives off is even less than a Torch. Because of that, it is often more useful as a decorative seasonal item than as primary nighttime lighting.

The Jack-O-Lantern can be removed by striking it with a Hoe, Pickaxe, or Axe. On the 17th of Fall, after the Stardew Valley Fair, Jack-O-Lanterns also appear in front of several buildings around town, including 1 Willow Lane, 2 Willow Lane, 1 River Road, the Carpenter’s Shop, and the Trailer. These are temporary festival decorations rather than permanent placements.

A placed Jack-O-Lantern will turn into a Rotten Plant on the 1st of Winter unless it is stored in a chest or carried in the player’s inventory. This makes it important to pick them up before the season changes if they are being used decoratively outside.

  • It is used in the Sewing Machine spool to create a clothing item.
  • It can be used in dyeing as an orange dye at the dye pots in Emily’s and Haley’s house at 2 Willow Lane.
  • It is not used in any quests.

As a result, the Jack-O-Lantern is mostly valued for its seasonal appearance and simple decorative use, especially during Fall and Spirit’s Eve, rather than for practical lighting efficiency.
