Liquid Management Guide: Plumbing, Duplication & Pools
Liquids are tile-based fluids (Water, Lava, Honey, and special liquids like Shimmer) that flow, fill containers, and interact with items, NPCs, and world mechanics. They matter for fishing, crafting, item/biome transformation (Shimmer), mobility, and liquid duplication techniques.
Liquid types and basic behavior
- Standard liquids: Water, Lava, Honey. Each occupies tile space and can be measured in tiles for fishing and building purposes.
- Special liquid: Shimmer — a unique liquid that transmutes items and can change liquids into other liquids when applied.
- Liquids flow according to tile pressure and gravity, can be contained by solid blocks, and can be placed/removed with buckets and other tools/items that manipulate liquid.
Fishing and lake sizes
- Fishing performance depends on the amount of contiguous liquid tiles in a pool:
- Most fishing lakes should have 300 or more tiles for optimal fishing.
- Oceans require 1001 tiles to spawn ocean fish.
- Honey-only fishing pools require 200 tiles.
- Natural lakes may meet these sizes but lack convenient placement; artificial lakes let you position fishing pools near bases and Pylons for safety and convenience.
Liquid duplication methods (practical order)
Players often use duplication to create large quantities of a liquid for building or farming.
- Liquid rockets (post-
Plantera) are the fastest duplication method.
- Liquid bombs are the next-fastest and are commonly used because they are relatively accessible: they require fishing in lava for lava critters to obtain materials for crafting bombs.
- Bottomless Buckets duplicate liquids but require extensive fishing to obtain.
- Regular bucket duplication is slowest but simplest.

Practical note: lava-bomb duplication often uses the Underworld's large lava pools. However, catching lava critters for nets (

Shimmer — transmutation liquid
- Shimmer is a special liquid that transforms items placed into it into other items according to fixed transmutation rules.
- Shimmer can also convert some liquids into other liquids when they come into contact.
- Shimmer is used for item farming and for obtaining otherwise difficult-to-craft or rare items through controlled transmutations.
Practical building and usage tips
- Build artificial fishing lakes to the recommended tile counts near your base to simplify fishing and Pylon travel.
- For lava needs (crafting, traps, smelting), consider using the Underworld for duplication via liquid bombs because of its large continuous lava pools.
- Use Bottomless Buckets and liquid rockets when high throughput is needed and you have progressed sufficiently in the game to obtain them.
- When using buckets for duplication, design basins or paired containers that exploit the half-tile placement rule to generate extra liquid.
Safety and accessibility
- Contain lava with proper blocks and barriers to avoid accidental player/NPC deaths.
- Honey is safe but slows movement; use blocks or platforms to control access.
- When working with Shimmer, keep transmutation pools controlled to avoid accidental conversion of valuable items.
