Overview

Natural Gas Geyser is a renewable world feature that periodically erupts Natural Gas into its surrounding tiles. It is one of the main sources of Natural Gas in the game, and it is especially valuable because it can support a long-term power setup without requiring dupes to continuously supply fuel. Natural Gas Geysers can appear in Swamp, Oil, and Caustic biomes, and either biome may contain one exposed geyser. On Terra asteroids, at least one Natural Gas Geyser is generated each time. If a Natural Gas Geyser does not generate, two Chlorine Gas Vents may appear instead.

Because the geyser is a gas source, the usual approach is to tap it with a Gas Pump and route the output to storage or directly to generators. An Atmo Sensor is useful for shutting down the pump when pressure gets low, which improves power efficiency and prevents damage from the initial burst of hot gas. Since the geyser can output gas at around 150 °C, the piping and nearby machinery should be planned with temperature in mind.

Natural Gas from geysers is excellent fuel for Natural Gas Generators, but it comes with two important by-products: Carbon Dioxide and Polluted Water. A generator array produces a significant amount of Carbon Dioxide, so it is often best to place the generators near a location where the gas can be separated and contained, or where it can be handled by an air-management system. The Polluted Water output is emitted from the generator’s third tile from the left, or second tile from the right, which makes a single mesh tile at that location a convenient way to direct the liquid output.

The geyser’s fuel is also attractive for heat-based builds. A Steel Natural Gas Generator can be built inside a steam-filled room and fed into a Steam Turbine, letting its heat output be recovered. At 150 °C input, the generator produces about 25.6 kDTU/s of net heat, with most of that available to the turbine. The Polluted Water output is hot enough that it is instantly converted to Steam in small quantities, which makes this setup effectively water-efficient and able to reclaim clean Water through the turbine output. In practice, the turbine room should be controlled carefully so the steam temperature does not fall below the turbine’s operating threshold.

A few practical notes:

  • Keep the pump and pipeline close to the geyser to reduce pipe length and simplify thermal management.
  • Use an Atmo Sensor to avoid wasting power when the gas pressure drops.
  • Expect to deal with both Carbon Dioxide and Polluted Water if the geyser is feeding generators continuously.
  • If you are building for heat recovery, match the generator room layout to a Steam Turbine setup instead of venting the by-products into the base.
  • The gas is hot enough that the first burst can damage vulnerable equipment if it is not prepared for high temperatures.
