Overview

The Magma Biome is a high-temperature biome centered around pools and flows of Magma and extremely hot rock. It contains multiple variants (Base, Volcano Hole, Solid Magma, Magma Vent, Volcano) that differ primarily in depth, temperature range, and how Magma is presented (liquid Magma, cooled Igneous Rock, or large volcanic features). The biome generates no Metal Ores, Gases, Plants, or Critters by default; instead it is notable for raw mineral deposits, igneous rock, and concentrated sources of useful but hazardous materials such as Chlorine Gas, Bleach Stone, Coal, Phosphorite, and Iron Ore in its rooms.

The biome’s temperature profile is very hot to extremely hot. Base and related high-temperature variants reach extremely hot ranges around 1226.85 ↔ 1526.85 °C in Volcano and Volcano Hole variants, while Magma Vent variants appear higher on the map and have a lower but still very hot range of 99.85 ↔ 296.85 °C. In the Solid Magma and Volcano Hole variants, Magma can cool into Igneous Rock, creating massive deposits of cooled rock.

Rooms and resource features are fairly consistent across variants. Typical features include a central and secondary short wide room that commonly contains Chlorine Gas, Coal, Phosphorite and Iron Ore; a blob room that can contain Chlorine Gas, Bleach Stone, Igneous Rock and Phosphorite; and geodes that yield Sand, Sandstone and Igneous Rock. Points of interest vary by specific map variation (Base, Frozen, Gassy, Steamy, Inactive) but commonly include a Cool Steam Vent and multiple ruins; some variations also include a single gas geyser type such as Natural Gas, Hydrogen, or Chlorine Gas Vent.

Variants and map-level differences:

  • Base Version: typical extreme temperatures and the standard arrangement of rooms and geodes. Liquids present include Magma and water is generally absent from this biome.
  • Volcano Hole: multiple Volcanoes present (the Volcano Hole variant contains 5 Volcanoes). Magma may cool into Igneous Rock here.
  • Volcano: used by the Volcanoes World Trait; this variant places 8 Volcanoes randomly across the map and uses the extremely hot temperature band.
  • Solid Magma: Magma has been cooled into Igneous Rock, yielding extensive solid igneous deposits.
  • Magma Vent: occurs higher on the map and features a lower temperature range while still producing Magma.

Gameplay notes and strategy:

  • The Magma Biome is extremely hazardous due to temperature and free Chlorine Gas pockets. Atmo Suits or equivalent extreme-environment protection are effectively required to traverse and exploit this biome safely.
  • The biome is a strong late-game resource source: Phosphorite found here is a precursor for advanced materials, and large quantities of Igneous Rock and Bleach Stone enable mass production of materials like Sand and Bleachstone-derived products.
  • Loot and ruins in the biome can provide useful items but are often placed near vents or high-temperature pockets; approach with cooling strategies and robust heat insulation.
  • Because no plants or critters spawn here, the biome is purely a mineral and geothermal resource zone rather than a biological one.

The game code and some localization reference this biome simply as "Magma". The extremely high temperatures and concentrated raw minerals make it a high-risk, high-reward destination for expeditions prepared to handle intense heat and reactive gases.
