Buddy Bud is a plant-like building that grows into a mobile critter in Oxygen Not Included. Placing a Buddy Bud provides an early-game, self-sustaining ally: it occupies a single tile, emits positive decor while healthy, and eventually reaches a stage where it stops growing and can spawn a Buddy (the mobile critter). Buddy Bud interacts with base decor, water usage for nearby research improvements, and temperature in predictable ways that affect its usefulness.
Buddy Bud grants +15 decor in a radius of 2 tiles while actively growing. If the Buddy Bud stops growing (for example, due to lack of required conditions), it becomes an eyesore and applies -20 decor in a radius of 4 tiles until revived or removed. Because of this strong local decor effect, Buddy Buds are useful as decorative anchors near high-traffic areas or living quarters, but must be maintained to avoid the larger negative penalty when they wither.
As a Science-class building enhancement, the device that evolves from or is fueled by Buddy Bud mechanics benefits from laboratory placement: when placed inside a Research Lab environment it receives a +10% research efficiency bonus. Increasing research efficiency for such science systems also increases their water consumption proportionally; higher efficiency speeds up point accrual but uses more water and demands more courier time from duplicants to supply that water. This makes conservative research progression advisable in early biomes that have limited fresh water until a reliable supply is secured.
Buddy Buds and their related research components can be repurposed for basic heat management. Feeding hot water into the research device (or using water interactions around Buddy Bud mechanics) provides a simple early-game heat sink. To reliably draw hot water from a specific source when using pumps, place Pitcher Pumps directly on top of the intended hot water body; pumps draw from the tile they sit on, and there is no in-game way to restrict water delivery by temperature, so duplicants may otherwise fetch cooler water.
Practical notes and tips:
Place Buddy Buds where their positive decoration benefits are maximized (near mess halls, bedrooms, or high-traffic corridors) but ensure growth conditions so they do not stop and incur the larger negative decor radius.
If you rely on the related science device for research, build it inside a Laboratory for the +10% efficiency bonus; monitor water consumption as higher efficiency multiplies water use and increases duplicant hauling time.
Use Buddy Bud–related water flows to offload heat early on by drawing water from intentionally hot pools with Pitcher Pumps. Pumps must be placed directly on the hot tile to guarantee the desired source.
Maintain a steady water supply before accelerating research; ration research priorities until you secure plumbing or a renewable water source to avoid stalling base development.
Be mindful of the Buddy Bud’s decor radii when planning room layouts: the small positive radius is powerful, but the much larger negative radius on stopped-growth Buddy Buds can severely degrade nearby room quality.
