Overview

Balm Lily is a cultivated plant in Oxygen Not Included that produces Balm Lily Flower, a crop used primarily in Medicine crafting and composting. Wild Balm Lily exists in the environment and can be harvested, but it is most commonly grown in player farms. It appears as a fast-growing, high-decor plant suited for compact farms that need positive morale effects.

Balm Lily can be planted in a Planter Box, Farm Tile, or Hydroponic Farm. When grown domestically it takes 12 cycles to reach maturity; wild Balm Lily grows in 48 cycles. The plant requires an atmosphere of Chlorine Gas, a temperature range of 35 °C to 85 °C, and an air pressure between 150 g and 10 kg to survive and grow reliably. Balm Lily grants +15 decor to nearby tiles within a 2-tile radius, making it useful for improving duplicant morale in farming areas.

Balm Lily Flower is an in-game item produced by the plant; the flower item is made of Genetic Ooze. Balm Lily Flower has two primary uses: it can be combined with Phosphorite at an Apothecary to create a Medical Pack, and it can be composted into Dirt. The Apothecary recipe is 1 Balm Lily Flower + 1 kg Phosphorite = 1 Medical Pack, and a Medical Pack can be used to treat Slimelung. Composting converts 1 Balm Lily Flower into 1 kg Dirt, providing a free source of soil when you tolerate the job cost of running a Compost pile.

Farm Tile interactions and practical farming notes:

  • Farm Tile is effectively a tile-version of a Planter Box and can host Balm Lily. Duplicants can plant a seed or deliver fertilizer from the back side of a Farm Tile.
  • Constructing a Farm Tile or planting any seed into one disables the Locavore achievement for that colony; simply building the tile is sufficient to make the achievement unavailable.
  • Farm Tiles do not impose a decor penalty (unlike Hydroponic Farms or Planter Boxes), so they are well suited for inline/compact farms where decor matters.
  • Farm Tiles do not grant a run speed bonus that regular floor tiles provide.
  • For compact layouts that require air or liquid circulation, mix Farm Tiles with Airflow or Mesh Tiles and Planter Boxes to maintain functionality without sacrificing space.
  • Recommended companion plants to plant on Farm Tiles include Mealwood, Dusk Cap, Dasha Saltvine (downwards orientation), and Wheezewort, alongside Balm Lily, depending on desired outputs and environmental constraints.

Because Balm Lily needs Chlorine Gas and relatively high temperatures, place cultivated beds where those conditions are stable, or provide localized atmospheres and heating. Composting harvested flowers is an efficient way to generate Dirt indefinitely if you can spare duplicant labor for compost tasks.
