Overview

Intentional Oboe is a relic that passively reduces incoming HP loss by 1 each time you would lose health. It appears as a small, thematic item in runs and functions as a consistent, per-hit damage mitigator that applies to all sources of HP loss governed by the game's damage resolution (physical hits, some direct damage events, etc.).

The effect is simple and reliable: whenever you would lose HP, the amount lost is decreased by 1. This reduction triggers separately for each discrete instance of HP loss, so multiple small hits each benefit from the +1 mitigation rather than being pooled into a single larger reduction.

Practical notes and interactions:

  • The relic is strongest when you face many low-damage hits (e.g., repeated 1–3 damage attacks), because each hit is reduced by 1, often negating or drastically lowering the damage. Against single large hits, the relative benefit is smaller but still consistent.
  • The mitigation applies at the moment HP would be reduced. It does not grant temporary shields or fractional damage: the damage value is reduced by one and then applied.
  • Because the effect is per-instance, it synergizes with enemy patterns and encounter designs that split damage into multiple discrete ticks (multi-hit enemies, damage-over-time that counts as separate hits, or traps that trigger repeatedly).
  • The relic functions identically across language versions: Japanese description reads "HP減少時、その値を1減らす。", Korean reads "체력을 잃을 때 받는 대미지가 1 감소합니다.", and Chinese reads "每当你将要损失血量时,减少1点本次损失血量。"
  • Intentional Oboe is conceptually inspired by Slay the Spire's Tungsten Rod and named as a play on the programming "off by one" error (OBOE), reflecting that it makes you lose one less health per hit.
