Overview

Sulfur is a resource in Astroneer that is obtained from gas resources rather than from surface deposits. It can be collected with the Tapper on the planets where it is available, and once gathered it functions as a normal crafting resource with storage and automation support like other materials.

Sulfur is used in crafting recipes that consume two units per craft. Its main practical importance is that it sits in the resource chain for item production, so keeping a supply on hand is useful when setting up repeated manufacturing runs or preparing materials for more advanced recipes.

A few interactions make Sulfur worth handling carefully:

  • Sulfur explodes if Dynamite is detonated nearby.
  • Sulfur also explodes if placed in an active Smelting Furnace.
  • Because it is a resource, it can be moved through automated systems and stored on resource containers like other stackable materials.

When using it in an automated base, it is best to keep Sulfur away from active processing equipment that can ignite or otherwise destroy it. It is also well suited to long-term gathering setups: leaving a Tapper running on a valid source planet and collecting the output into a container allows steady production with minimal supervision.

Sulfur’s role in the game is straightforward but important. It is not a buildable module itself; instead, it is a material used to support crafting and logistics. Players who rely on automation or who want to stockpile rare resources can treat it as a medium-priority supply item, especially because it is tied to volatile interactions that can punish careless placement.
