Overview

The Hive Mother is a boss found deep within an extra large Larva Hive, approximately 330 tiles from The Core at the center of the biome. A Hive Mother Scanner can reveal her location on the map. After defeating her, she can be summoned again by placing a Hive Mother Summoning Idol on the rune below her original spawn point.

In combat, the Hive Mother attacks by raining acid onto the player every 4–5 seconds. The acid deals moderate impact damage and leaves a small patch of Ground Acid Slime, which inflicts 12 acid damage per second to anything standing in it. She also summons Larva Hive Eggs at one of five arena locations every 17–10 seconds, with the interval shortening as her health decreases. In multiplayer, she spawns additional eggs when the world has at least 3 players and again when it has at least 6 players.

The Larva Hive Eggs hatch after 7.4 seconds if left intact. Each egg spawns a Big Hive Larva along with one of the following groups:

  • 6–7 Hive Larvae
  • 2 Big Hive Larvae
  • 3 Acid Larvae

At 60% health, the Hive Mother becomes enraged. In this state, she fires acid more quickly, every 2–2.5 seconds, and begins spawning an additional Larva Hive Egg. This makes the fight considerably more hectic, especially because the eggs add pressure by creating more enemies if they are not destroyed quickly.

The enemies that hatch from the eggs are tougher than normal larva variants. They have a larger aggro radius, can detect players outside line of sight, and do not drop loot. Their individual traits also make them dangerous in different ways:

  • Hive Larva have more health and deal more damage than normal.
  • Big Hive Larva can break through almost any objects or walls in their path.
  • Acid Larva deal significantly more explosive damage.

Because of this, the fight rewards fast target switching and arena control. Destroying eggs before they hatch prevents extra enemies from spawning and reduces the amount of space the boss can deny with acid patches. Since the acid pools persist on the ground, leaving open routes through the arena and avoiding clustered movement helps keep the battle manageable. Trap setups, such as Spike Traps, can also be used to help clear spawned larvae and pressure the boss.

Before version 1.0, the Hive Mother was required for progression and had her own statue next to The Core instead of Malugaz the Corrupted. The boss also has a special Halloween-exclusive variant, the Haunted Hive Mother, which is summoned with a Haunted Hive Mother Summoning Idol on her rune.
