Overview

Refined Carbon is a refined material used as an industrial ingredient and construction material in Oxygen Not Included. It functions primarily as an intermediate resource required by advanced production buildings rather than as a basic building block mined directly from the environment. Refined Carbon appears in recipes for high-tier alloys and advanced goods and can also be used where a high-performance insulator material is needed.

Refined Carbon is required by the Metal Refinery to produce Steel: the Metal Refinery recipe for Steel consumes Iron, Refined Carbon and Lime to produce Steel (Iron 70 kg + Refined Carbon 20 kg + Lime 10 kg → Steel 100 kg). Refined Carbon is also an input for the Diamond Press: the Diamond Press converts Refined Carbon together with radiation into Diamond (Refined Carbon 100 kg + Radiation 1000 units → Diamond 100 kg). Because these outputs (Steel and Diamond) are essential for late-game buildings and equipment, Refined Carbon is an important logistic resource to prioritize once those technologies are unlocked.

Practical notes for handling and use:

  • Prioritize supply chains: place Refined Carbon storage and conveyor routing close to Metal Refineries and Diamond Presses to avoid long transport times and duplication of hauling trips. Running these machines frequently can consume significant quantities of Refined Carbon.
  • Production planning: because Steel requires Refined Carbon in addition to Iron and Lime, plan your production of all three inputs together. Shortages of Refined Carbon will stall Steel production even if Iron and Lime are available.
  • Diamond production trade-offs: the Diamond Press trades large quantities of Refined Carbon (and radiation) for Diamonds. Use this when you need Diamonds for high-tier equipment, but account for the heavy Refined Carbon cost.
  • Construction use: Refined Carbon can be employed as a building material where high insulating performance is desired; include it among candidate materials when building thermal barriers or components that benefit from its properties.
  • Storage and safety: store Refined Carbon in a dedicated stockpile or storage bin to prevent accidental consumption by other machines and to make it easy for duplicants to access when needed.

Because Refined Carbon is consumed by mid- and late-game production chains, maintaining a steady reserve will smooth Steel and Diamond production and enable construction choices that rely on its insulating characteristics.
