Overview

Distraction Reaction is a reaction effect that grants Ballusion (also translated as "幻影"/"환각" in other locales) when the player loses health. It appears as a conditional passive reaction: whenever the player loses X HP, they immediately gain 2X stacks of Ballusion. The effect triggers from HP loss due to enemy attacks or other sources that reduce health.

Ballusion is a temporary status applied to the player; Distraction Reaction scales directly with the amount of HP lost, making larger hits more rewarding in Ballusion stacks. Because the effect converts lost HP into a defensive/utility resource, it fits into strategies that trade health for immediate protection or setup for bounce/peg interactions that consume or benefit from Ballusion.

Practical notes and interactions:

  • The reaction stacks linearly: losing 1 HP grants 2 Ballusion, losing 3 HP grants 6 Ballusion, etc.
  • The effect activates on each distinct instance of HP loss; multiple small hits produce Ballusion for each hit.
  • Distraction Reaction is especially valuable when paired with effects or items that consume Ballusion for defensive benefits or that improve survivability after taking damage.
  • It synergizes with builds that deliberately take controlled damage to convert HP into actionable Ballusion, but players must manage overall survivability because the reaction does not prevent the damage itself.
  • Distraction Reaction was introduced in v0.9.32 and its rarity was changed to common in v0.9.44.

The visual presentation of Distraction Reaction sprites is part of a set that references chess piece imagery, sharing stylistic ties with reactions such as Bastion Reaction and Subtraction Reaction.
