Overview

Fiery Furnace is a relic that awards Ballwark (armor) whenever a shielded peg is destroyed. It triggers each time a peg carrying the peg_shielded status is broken, granting a fixed amount of Ballwark specified by the game variable BALLWARK_SHIELD_PEG_DESTROY_GAIN. The relic has existed since early versions of the game and has received small balance adjustments to its Ballwark amount.

Fiery Furnace functions as an on-destroy trigger rather than a passive shield provider: it does not create shields itself but converts shielded-peg destructions into immediate armor for the player. Because the effect scales with the number of shielded pegs you destroy in a single board, it rewards builds and setups that generate or funnel multiple shielded pegs into damage zones.

  • The relic currently grants 4 Ballwark per destroyed shielded peg as of v0.9.25 (previously granted 5, changed in v0.9.25; behavior fixed to reliably grant Ballwark on shield destruction in v0.9.22).
  • Works with any source of the peg_shielded status; the trigger checks peg status at the moment of destruction.
  • Synergizes strongly with effects that create or concentrate shielded pegs, and with tools that repeatedly break multiple shielded pegs in one turn.

Practical notes and common synergies:

  • Pair Fiery Furnace with Ballpeen Hammer and Forbification to convert repeated shielded-peg breaks into sustained armor generation; these tools help create or exploit shielded pegs efficiently.
  • Combining Fiery Furnace with Essential Oil doubles the Ballwark gained (Essential Oil doubles Ballwark gains), amplifying its defensive output.
  • Positioning and board control that funnel shielded pegs into multi-hit zones (or that create chains of shielded pegs) maximize the relic’s value.
  • Fiery Furnace is best used on runs that already include shield-generation or shield-creation modifiers; without shielded pegs present the relic provides no benefit.
