Shield Mage

Overview

Shield Mages add peg_shield tiles to the board and produce Ballwark from those shields. They can accumulate large amounts of Ballwark, and when their stored armor becomes excessive they can trigger a high-damage ability often called Shield Burst that deals substantial damage to the player. The unit’s design ties into game lore: knights proficient with both shieldcraft and magic are candidates to be augmented into Shield Mages.
- Expect Shield Mages to change board state rather than simply vanish; many strategies must account for newly created shield pegs that act as additional targets and sources of Ballwark.
- Abilities and items that destroy or bypass shield pegs are particularly effective. Infernorbs will one-shot shield pegs, making them useful against Shield Mages. Worbhammer also performs well at removing the shields they spawn.
Ballpeen Hammer synergizes with Shield Mages for the “Ballwark in a China Shop” achievement by enabling easy destruction of the generated Ballwark/shield pegs.
- Defensive timing can mitigate the Mage’s burst damage. If the player has
Round Guard (or similar reload-timing defense) it is possible to time a reload with the Mage’s high-damage attack to fully negate incoming damage.
Fiery Furnace amplifies this interaction by converting destroyed shield pegs into additional Ballwark for the player.
- Monitor the Mage’s accumulated Ballwark; allowing it to build unchecked leads to the Shield Burst mechanic, which deals massive damage and can swing a fight quickly.
Shield Mages appear in event boards and custom encounters and are often introduced through specific events or board setups that present their associated dialogue and visuals.
