Overview

Castle Lightning Rod is a defensive building found in the Castle area. It is designed to absorb targeted (locking) attacks while remaining highly vulnerable to projectile and thrown damage. Peglins become fixated on the Lightning Rod’s shiny metal, which forces them to target it first and prevents them from switching targets until it is destroyed.

The Lightning Rod is built from iron deposits and crystals mined beneath the Castle; these materials give it both durability against aiming attacks and an eye-catching gleam that distracts allied units. In practice the device protects nearby knights and allied units from focused attacks but can undermine battlefield cohesion because some units may refuse to perform duties while mesmerized by it.

Gameplay and strategy notes:

  • The rod reliably draws locking and targeted abilities away from other high-value targets, making it an effective decoy against single-target spells and abilities.
  • It takes significantly increased damage from projectile and thrown sources; using spread or thrown attacks will quickly neutralize it.
  • Because peglins (and allied knights in lore) will not change targets while the rod remains, placing projectile-heavy attacks or pegs that produce many thrown hits near the rod is the most efficient way to remove it.
  • The Lightning Rod’s presence can be used to manipulate enemy targeting priorities: lure locking attacks into the rod while your damage dealers focus elsewhere.
  • Keep in mind its attraction mechanic when designing boards: the rod can protect a fragile unit behind it from aim-based attacks but will not protect against area or projectile damage that bypasses its weakness.

Version notes:

  • Introduced in v0.7.20. An earlier name for the item was Bronze Rod; a later update increased its health from 555 to 575 and renamed it Castle Lightning Rod.
