Hydrazine

Overview
Hydrazine is a consumable resource used primarily as rocket fuel in Astroneer. It is one of the key propulsion materials in the game, powering spacecraft travel through the
Hydrazine is closely tied to long-distance movement. One canister is equal to 8 fuel units, and a Hydrazine Thruster can mount up to 3 canisters for a total of 24 fuel units. Using the thruster costs 1 fuel unit to take off and 1 fuel unit for interplanetary travel, while landing does not consume fuel. Outside of a spacecraft, a canister can fire a Hydrazine Thruster for 12.7 seconds. It can also fuel a single
Hydrazine is also used in chemistry and manufacturing. A partially used canister can still be used to make graphene in the
A few practical notes make Hydrazine safer and more efficient to use:
- Hydrazine used to be stored in a Canister like
Soil, but it became an independent resource in the Crafting Update.
- A
Medium Fluid & Soil Canister can be filled directly from 24 Hydrazine canisters. When emptied into it, the Hydrazine Canister disappears, and a new one is created again when the container is set to enable output.
- Hydrazine is based on the real-world inorganic compound N2H4, which has historically been used as rocket fuel or as part of rocket fuel mixtures.
- Explosive plants on
Atrox can destroy Hydrazine carried in a backpack or attached to a thruster when landing with a shuttle, which can leave the player unable to continue traveling.
- Hydrazine explodes in a larger radius than some other explosive materials, but it must be triggered by a nearby explosion or placed into an active explosive setup to detonate.
Its combination of travel utility, crafting use, and explosive risk makes Hydrazine one of the most important and potentially dangerous resources to manage carefully.
