Coal Generator

Overview

The Coal Generator is a fuel-burning power building that converts Coal into electrical output. It provides a higher power yield than the Manual Generator, trading off greater energy production for byproducts that affect the immediate environment. The unit consumes Coal as fuel and, while generating more usable energy than manual human-powered options, produces both heat and exhaust (smoke/combustion gases) as part of its operation.

Because the Coal Generator emits heat and exhaust, its placement and surrounding infrastructure influence colony conditions. The generator is best used when you need sustained, higher-output power than can be supplied by Manual Generator setups, but you must account for the thermal load and contaminant gases it produces. These byproducts can raise local temperature and contribute to atmospheric pollution if left unmanaged.

  • Coal fuel: the building operates by burning Coal; it is a direct fuel-to-electricity device rather than relying on duplicant labor like the Manual Generator.
  • Power tradeoff: produces more electrical energy than a Manual Generator, making it preferable for baseline or mid-tier power needs when fuel supply is available.
  • Environmental costs: operation generates heat and exhaust; these effects are intrinsic to its combustion process and must be mitigated by the player to avoid adverse impacts on nearby rooms and systems.
  • Practical considerations: separate generator rooms, ventilation, and heat-handling strategies are necessary when using Coal Generators to prevent overheating and to control exhaust gases. Locating them away from sensitive areas and pairing them with systems that address heat and fumes preserves colony function while taking advantage of the generator’s higher output.

The Coal Generator occupies the niche between low-output, labor-based power and more complex, cleaner technologies: it increases available energy compared with Manual Generators but imposes additional environmental management requirements due to its heat and exhaust production.
