Overview

Landscape Canvas is a player-built decorative painting in Oxygen Not Included. It is part of the painting system added in the Oil Upgrade, and it produces one of several fixed artworks depending on the artist’s quality level when the painting is created. These paintings are used to raise Decor in a colony room and can be built from the usual painting materials, with the chosen construction material also affecting the final Decor value.

A Landscape Canvas can result in three quality tiers of artwork. Crude paintings provide the lowest bonus, with a small base Decor increase. Quaint paintings sit in the middle, while Masterpiece paintings provide the highest base Decor bonus. The exact artwork assigned depends on the Duplicant creating it, and the set of possible paintings includes pieces such as The Twins, Ground Zero, Still Life with Barbeque and Frost Bun, Composition with Three Colors, Behold, A Fork, The Astronomer at Home, Iconic Iteration, La Belle Meep, Glorious Vole, The Swell Swell, Flight of the Slicksters, The Shiny Night, and Hot Afternoon.

The material used to build the canvas also modifies its Decor bonus. Reed Fiber is the required construction material and provides a 10% Decor bonus to the painting’s total value. Gold Amalgam or Copper Ore can be used for an additional 10% bonus, while Niobium grants a much larger 50% bonus. Because Niobium is extremely rare, it is usually not worth spending on a Landscape Canvas unless the colony has an abundance of it.

Useful notes:

  • The painting’s quality is determined when a Duplicant completes the work, so higher-skill artists are preferred if you want the best Decor output.
  • Material choice matters as much as the artwork itself; using better materials can noticeably improve the painting’s final value.
  • Reed Fiber is the standard option, while Gold Amalgam and Copper Ore are efficient upgrades for a modest improvement.
  • Niobium gives the largest bonus, but its rarity makes it a luxury choice rather than a practical one.
  • Landscape Canvas is primarily a room-filling Decor building, so it is best placed where Duplicants spend time, such as living areas, hallways, or room interiors that benefit from higher Decor.
