Weight Plate
Overview
The Weight Plate is a floor-mounted building that detects the mass of creatures standing on it and is used in logic and automation setups that depend on physical presence or weight. It does not detect the mass of buildings in the tile above it, so placing a rocket engine or other building over the tile will not trigger it. Critter mass can be checked in the critter’s parameters tab; for example, a Duplicant has a mass of 30 kg.
Because it responds to actual mass rather than just occupancy, the Weight Plate is useful for distinguishing between different critters or for creating weight-sensitive triggers. It can also be affected by environmental heat exchange: a Tempshift Plate exchanges heat with Weight Plates, so nearby tempshift tiles can influence its temperature. This makes the Weight Plate part of the set of buildings that interact thermally with tempshift plates, alongside tiles, airlocks when closed, transit tube crossings, heavy-watt joint plates, farm tiles, fish buildings, and the solid tiles of gantries.
A few practical points:
- It can detect critter weight, but not the mass of buildings placed above it.
- Duplicants and other creatures can be used as weight sources, and their mass values are available in their parameters.
- It participates in heat exchange with Tempshift Plates, so its placement can matter in temperature-controlled builds.
- Since it does not react to building mass, it is reliable for setups where you want to ignore overhead structures and only care about living things.
In short, the Weight Plate is a specialized sensor for mass-based automation, especially where simple presence checks are not enough.
