Granite

Granite is a naturally occurring mineral in Oxygen Not Included that commonly surrounds the starting biome and is typically accessed very early in a colony. It is classified as a Mineral rock and appears as large granite deposits that can be mined into usable Granite tiles. Granite provides a +20% decor bonus when used as constructed building material, making it more decorative than many common rocks and well-suited for areas where duplicant morale and environment matter.

Granite has distinct thermal properties within the game. It has the highest Thermal Conductivity of all Mineral rocks, which makes it excellent at transferring heat between zones. Its thermal capacity is relatively low, so it does not store large amounts of heat; instead it moves heat quickly. These traits make Granite useful as a budget alternative to dedicated thermal infrastructure (for example, as a crude radiant conductor), but the same high conductivity can create unwanted temperature leaks if placed between areas that must be thermally isolated.

Granite is used in several crafting and processing recipes. A Marble Block requires 400 kg of Granite or Obsidian as its input material. Granite can be processed by a Rock Crusher into Sand at a 1:1 mass ratio (100 kg Granite → 100 kg Sand). Certain critters interact with raw rock: Stone Hatches are able to consume Granite and excrete Coal as a byproduct.

• Granite deposits are commonly available at the start of a run and are a reliable early source of building rock.
• Use Granite for high-traffic rooms, hallways, recreational spaces, art installations, and sculptures to take advantage of its +20% decor bonus.
• Place Granite carefully when temperature control matters: its high thermal conductivity will rapidly equalize temperatures across connected masses and can undermine zoning of hot or cold areas.
• Consider Granite as a cost-effective thermal conductor when you need to move heat away from machinery or distribute warmth, but avoid using it as an insulator.
• Convert excess Granite to Sand via the Rock Crusher if you need construction sand or want to feed processes that use Sand; conversion preserves mass.
• Use Granite as a feedstock when crafting Marble Blocks if you require that building material for aesthetic or structural reasons.
• Stone Hatches can be used to turn mined Granite into Coal through their digestion-excretion cycle if you need fuel resources.
