Breathable Gas

Overview

Breathable Gas is a gas-state resource that appears as a piped gas content in the game. It can be moved through gas pipes, stored in pipe segments, and visually appears in the ventilation overlay like other gases. Each gas pipe segment holds 1000 g of gas, and the pipe system updates once per second, so a single pipeline can move up to 1 kg/s.

It exchanges heat with the gas pipe segment it occupies, and that pipe segment then exchanges heat with the tile. Because of this, the thermal conductivity of the pipe material has a major effect on how quickly the gas changes temperature. Among the standard materials used for gas pipes, Granite transfers heat the fastest, while Ceramic transfers heat the slowest before Thermium and Insulation become available. A gas pipe segment does not exchange heat with nearby pipe segments.

Breathable Gas can occupy the same tile space as other buildings, with the exception of other gas pipes. The Ventilation Overlay highlights all gas pipes as well as building intakes and outputs, which makes it easier to trace how the gas is moving through a base or rocket setup.

A few practical notes:

  • It automatically connects when built to the side of a Rocket Platform or another Rocket Port.
  • It uses built-in gas filters.
  • Liquids may become invisible on top of an airflow tile.

The gas’s handling makes it useful anywhere controlled gas flow matters, especially where pipe routing, filtering, and heat transfer are important.
