Overview

Sulfur is a soft, low-melting element used mainly as a ranching and industrial input. Its low hardness and melting point make it useful for creating natural tiles for Pip farms, though similar results can also be achieved earlier in the game by heating Fertilizer, Slime, or Algae into Dirt. It is also a key fertilizer and ingredient for several critters and processes.

Sulfur has several direct uses:

  • Grubfruit Plants consume 10 kg per cycle of Sulfur as fertilizer.
  • Sweetles eat 20 kg per cycle of Sulfur.
  • It is also consumed by Sweetle larvae? More importantly, it is one of the inputs for Fullerene production in the Molecular Forge: 5 kg Sulfur + 5 kg Aluminum + 90 kg Graphite = 100 kg Fullerene.
  • Because of its softness and low melting point, it can be used to build natural tiles for Pip ranches.

In terms of production, Sulfur is obtained by cooling Sour Gas. When Sour Gas is cooled to -163.5 °C at its condensation point of -2 °C, it separates into Methane (67% mass) and Sulfur (33% mass). It does not appear naturally on most Vanilla asteroids, with the Aridio Asteroid being the main exception, where it spawns in the Rust Biome. In the Spaced Out DLC, it appears in the Wasteland Biome and the Radioactive Biome, and it can also be produced as liquid from Sulfur Geysers. It is additionally available from renewable Radioactive Asteroid Fields during rocket missions.

For ranching and production planning, Sulfur is most valuable when you want to support Grubfruit Plants or Sweetles while also taking advantage of its physical properties. Its usefulness for natural tiles makes it more than just a fertilizer ingredient, especially on maps where Pip ranching is part of the resource loop.
