Overview

The Snow Peccary is a cold-adapted variant of the Peccary creature that appears exclusively in the Residence Sector. It resembles a standard Peccary but is covered in a thick white coat of fur that evolved to withstand sub-zero temperatures. The GATE compendium contains a field report entry for the entity under the identifier IS-0178-H, recording that its physiology can rapidly rework itself to endure and exploit cold environments; however, some in-game references note that the Peccary lacks an IS designation or a full compendium entry, indicating inconsistency in archival records.

Snow Peccaries are passive wanderers until provoked, at which point they become hostile toward all entities, including Gatekeepers, the player, and player-deployed objects. They cannot open doors except when in a hostile state. While roaming or after engaging, they occasionally spawn Tainted Carbuncles on the ground.

Combat behavior changes with distance. At long range (roughly the equivalent of eight to nine storage crates away) they use a ranged attack that can freeze the player on impact; this attack can be dodged by side-stepping and blocked with a shield. They may also perform a tackle at distance that is dodgeable by side-stepping. At close range (closer than eight to nine storage crates) they switch to an unavoidable melee attack that can still be blocked with a shield but cannot be dodged. If the player continues running after initial engagement, Snow Peccaries will sometimes perform a jump attack after two to three seconds; this follow-up can be evaded by maintaining distance and moving sideways.

Practical notes and interactions:

  • Appearance: thick white fur and larger build relative to initial distant observations of Peccaries; visually distinguishable in snowy areas of the Residence Sector.
  • Habitat: spawns only in the Residence Sector; do not expect them elsewhere.
  • Aggression: passive until provoked, then hostile to all factions and player deployables.
  • Special hazards: ranged freeze effect can immobilize the player briefly; watch for spawned Tainted Carbuncles on the battlefield.
  • Combat tips: keep distance to force ranged/tackle behaviors that permit dodging; use side-stepping to avoid ranged and tackle attacks, and keep a shield ready to block both ranged and melee strikes. If forced into close quarters, prepare to block rather than rely on dodging.
  • Loot: guaranteed drops include Raw Alien Drumstick and Raw Peccary Chop. They have a 50% chance to drop Yeti Fur and a 50% chance to drop a Snow Peccary Skull.

Field reports emphasize the Snow Peccary’s remarkable physiological adaptation to cold and note that even improvised autopsies revealed rapid systemic modification to cold conditions. Researchers cataloging Anteverse fauna consider the Snow Peccary an example of extreme environmental specialization among Peccary variants.
