Medium Rover

The Medium Rover is a drivable vehicle in Astroneer designed for mid-sized hauling and exploration. It can be chained with other rovers to form trains, making it useful for transporting resources, moving between areas, and acting as a mobile field base. Like other rovers, it can provide oxygen and power connections, and its relatively compact size gives it slightly better maneuverability than the Large Rover.

A Medium Rover starts with a large top attachment slot that can hold two medium items or four small items. Its front and rear each have a tier-two slot for carrying small or medium items, but attaching a cable to either end locks that end’s storage point and ejects any item already attached there. This makes it a flexible platform for storage, but careful cable routing is important if you want to keep both ends usable.

Power use is straightforward: the Medium Rover consumes power while moving or turning at 0.5 U/s. Without an external power source or added batteries, its internal 8 units of power are exhausted in 16 seconds of continuous driving. A Small Battery greatly extends its driving time, and power can also be supplied from a base, a Habitat, generators, solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, or power cells.

Medium Rovers can be tethered together into trains, just like Large Rovers. Train size is limited by both the number of vehicles and how heavily loaded they are; larger and fuller trains slow down, lose climbing ability, and may stop moving entirely. Smaller trains of two to four cars are generally the safest and most practical. A Medium Rover can pull one loaded Large Rover or three loaded Medium Rovers. When pulling a loaded Large Rover, power drain stays the same, but handling becomes poor because the larger rover tends to jack-knife when braking.

• Medium Rovers can supply unlimited oxygen and can serve as temporary camps while exploring.
• Their weight changes based on attached modules, added parts, and cargo, which affects speed and train behavior.
• They have fewer advantages than the Large Rover overall, but they are slightly more maneuverable and can be a better choice in mountainous terrain or when you want a smaller vehicle with plenty of storage.
• Common useful attachments include Medium Storage for extra cargo space, Large Storage to double top attachment points, and tools such as the Winch or Crane for specialized hauling and resource collection.
• Drill Heads can be attached directly to the front of the rover to dig tunnels while driving.
