Cursed Mask

Overview

The item's current behavior grants a bonus that scales with the number or severity of negative status effects affecting the player. This design encourages builds that either tolerate or deliberately accumulate debuffs to gain stronger returns from the Mask. The rework in v0.7.20 changed the Mask from its previous static effect into a conditional, negative-effect–based buff, making it situational rather than universally optimal.
Practical notes and interactions:
- The Mask is most effective in runs that include sources of self-inflicted debuffs, enemy-inflicted curses, or items that trade drawbacks for power; pairing it with such cards or relics maximizes its value.
- Because the bonus depends on negative effects, avoid removing debuffs from the player (via cleanses or defensive items) when relying on the Mask, unless the cleanse yields greater net benefit.
- The Mask can synergize with mechanics that repeatedly apply short-duration negative effects, as frequent reapplication maintains or increases its bonus.
- Choose pathing and card choices to preserve the conditions that trigger the Mask’s benefit; if a run provides few debuffs, the Mask performs poorly compared to more straightforward stat items.
