Overview

Pocket Sand is a reactive relic that punishes enemies for hitting the player with melee attacks by inflicting Blindness on the attacker. It appears as a passive effect: whenever an enemy lands a close-range (melee) hit on the player, Pocket Sand immediately applies a number of Darkness/Blind stacks equal to the relic's Blind amount parameter. The effect is presented in-game as applying "暗闇" / "어둠" / "致盲" in non-English localizations and as Darkness/Blind in English files.

Pocket Sand functions defensively and indirectly offensive: it does not block damage or prevent the strike, but it degrades the attacker’s accuracy and effectiveness after they hit. Because the effect triggers on being hit, it scales with how often enemies can make melee contact; enemies that strike multiple times or rapidly receive repeated Darkness stacks. The relic is particularly useful against foes that rely on follow-up melee hits, melee swarms, or single strong melee attackers that make repeated attempts to hit.

Practical notes and interactions:

  • The Blind/Darkness stacks applied are equal to the relic parameter {[POCKET_BLIND_AMT]}; check your current run’s numeric value (relic tooltip) for the exact amount.
  • The trigger condition is a successful melee hit on the player. Ranged attacks or non-damaging contact do not trigger Pocket Sand.
  • Pocket Sand synergizes with strategies that prolong fights or force enemies to make multiple melee attacks (e.g., builds that stall or draw aggro), because each hit grants additional Blind to the attacker.
  • It pairs well with crowd-control and accuracy-reduction effects: applying Blind to already-weakened or high-attack-rate enemies multiplies the defensive benefit.
  • Pocket Sand is primarily a defensive relic rather than a damage source; use it to reduce enemy threat and improve survivability rather than to directly clear enemies.

The relic name is a cultural reference: the name is most likely a reference to the line by Dale Gribble from the animated sitcom King of the Hill, who famously throws sand at assailants while saying "Pocket sand."
