Ballad is an enemy encountered in Peglin. It is a durable miniboss-like foe notable for applying multiple temporary buffs that interact strongly with Critical-focused builds. Ballad was introduced in the beta and carried into Early Access; in v0.7.17 its health was raised to 1,989 while its damage was reduced to 25. Outside of bosses, Ballad is among the highest-HP enemies encountered in normal encounters, and multiple Ballads can appear in a single run.
Ballad's primary mechanic is to add multiple stacks of the Spinesse-style buff (commonly referred to in sources as the effect that increases Critical damage potential) when it is hit by orbs. Because it grants several stacks at once, Ballad synergizes exceptionally well with items and relics that multiply or capitalize on Critical effects. Mask of Joy adds an additional Spinesse after Ballad fires its orb. Relics such as Critsomallos Fleece, Critikris, and Critsoballos greatly benefit from Ballad because the enemy inflates Crit damage potential, increasing the payoff for existing Critical Pegs. Players do not strictly need multiple Critical Pegs to use Ballad effectively, but pairing Ballad with Critical-focused pegs and relics substantially increases damage output.
Because Ballad applies multiple buff stacks simultaneously, players should consider taking pick-ups that amplify buff application or orb effects. Signal Boostorb and Spinpoint multiply the number of Spinesse buffs granted, while Mask of Joy directly augments the effect after firing. Ballad also appears on stages with special invisible enemy mechanics (listed sources reference Invisible Enemy / Invisible Miniboss), and some related encounters use visual status markers (Blind / Darcness in different wikis) to explain invisibility mechanics rather than inflict meaningful gameplay penalties.
Ballad commonly appears alongside or is sourced from a variety of orbs and relics in run generation. Orbs and relics associated in sources include Dark/ Darkness Eterball, Exacorbate, Go For The Icircle, Roundreloquence, Pocket Sand, Sand Arrows, Smoke Mod, Branch of Ember, and Mask of Sorrow. Because of its high HP and buff-generation behavior, Ballad is best handled by builds that either burst it down quickly with boosted criticals or mitigate its buff stacking by denying it repeated orb triggers. When planning a run, prioritize Critical-synergy relics and peg selection if you accept Ballad, and consider amplifiers like Signal Boostorb or Spinpoint to multiply the benefit.
