Command Capsule
Overview
The Command Capsule is the rocket component that provides piloting control for launches. It functions as the essential control point for a Rocket: without at least one crew member assigned to the Command Capsule, the Rocket cannot be piloted. In practical terms the Command Capsule is the location you must staff to initiate and carry out guided flight operations; it is the interface between duplicant (astronaut) assignment and the vessel’s piloting system.
Because the Command Capsule is the required seat of control, planning for flights always includes ensuring a qualified crew member will be able to occupy it at the time of launch. Assigning an astronaut to the Command Capsule is the explicit condition for enabling piloting; if no astronaut is assigned, piloting cannot occur. This makes the Command Capsule the single critical building for any mission that depends on controlled Rocket movement.
Operational notes and considerations:
- Always confirm there is at least one assigned astronaut before attempting to pilot a Rocket; the assignment is a prerequisite for initiating piloted flight.
- The Command Capsule is the point of interaction between duplicant crew assignment and Rocket controls; crew management and scheduling must account for the need to have someone available to occupy the capsule at launch time.
- If a mission plan requires piloted maneuvers, the Command Capsule must be staffed even if other Rocket systems are functional; staffing is independent of fuel, staging, or other mechanical readiness conditions and is specifically about crew presence for piloting.
- Because only an assigned astronaut can perform piloting actions from the Command Capsule, ensure assignment rules and priorities do not prevent a duplicant from reaching or entering the capsule when a launch is planned.
In summary, the Command Capsule is the mandatory crewed control module for piloted Rockets: mission success for any piloted flight depends on assigning at least one astronaut to it.
