Overview

Gift That Keeps Giving is a special peg type that appears as a durable set of pegs granting the Durable effect to every peg on the board. It was introduced in the demo and has persisted through beta and subsequent updates, receiving sprite changes and various bugfixes across versions. The internal identifier for this entity is UNPOPPABLE_PEGS, but despite that name its pegs can be popped during play.

All pegs on the board receive the Durable trait while this entity is active, which prevents them from being destroyed by a single hit and causes them to require multiple hits as usual for durable pegs. Refresh, critical, and bomb pegs created while Durable is active still only trigger their special abilities once as part of the game’s balancing; certain relics (for example, Critsomallos Fleece) can enable refresh and critical pegs to activate their effects multiple times, overriding that single-trigger limitation.

The appearance and sprite have changed since introduction: an earlier sprite showed a green-and-red present, while a later sprite uses a white-and-orange present with an isometric perspective. The entity’s behavior and presentation have been adjusted in several updates (notably v0.6.18, v0.7.16, v0.7.36, and v0.8.22) to fix bugs such as a four-hit interaction and to update the visual representation.

Practical notes for play:

  • Expect every peg on the board to require the Durable number of hits while this effect is present; plan shots that can deal repeated hits or exploit multi-hit interactions.
  • Special pegs (refresh, critical, bomb) still function but are limited to a single activation unless modified by relics that change their trigger behavior.
  • Because the entity grants a board-wide property rather than being a single unpoppable object, traditional peg-clearing strategies remain viable but require accounting for increased peg survivability.
  • Visual changes to the sprite do not alter the mechanical Durable effect; treat appearance updates as purely cosmetic.
