Overview

The QT-RTG is a compact, always-on power source in Astroneer. It provides a constant 1U/s of power and can be placed on platforms, carried on the backpack, or set directly on the ground. Compared to the standard RTG, it is much smaller and weaker, but its size and portability make it one of the most useful sources of steady power for early exploration, mobile bases, and lightweight travel setups.

QT-RTGs can be obtained from several progression and reward sources. They may be earned by completing certain Missions, found in EXO Dynamics Research Aids that require Astronium, rarely recovered from wrecks, claimed as rewards from the EXO Request Platform, or traded for by using 4 Activated Fault Finders on the Trade Platform. In Creative Mode, they can be crafted with 2 nuggets of Nanocarbon Alloy. They were also first shown publicly in a developer stream before release.

Because a QT-RTG produces power continuously, it is especially valuable when paired with systems that normally depend on external wiring or fuel. A Portable Oxygenator will run indefinitely when powered by a QT-RTG, which removes the need to stay connected to an oxygen network. The item is also excellent for rover chains: it can keep any rover powered indefinitely, even underground, and it is the only infinite power source that fits the Buggy.

Practical uses include:

  • Keeping a Portable Oxygenator running without batteries or generators.
  • Powering rovers for long-distance travel and underground excavation.
  • Building an extremely compact mobile power bank by filling a Medium Storage Silo with 24 QT-RTGs.
  • Supplying power while charging Gateway Chambers.
  • Running an Atmospheric Condenser to make gas collection easier.
  • Pairing with a Hoverboard for effectively unlimited movement.
  • Serving as an early stable power source on low-yield planets such as Atrox.

Although it is not nearly as powerful as the standard RTG, the QT-RTG fills a different role. Its strength lies in convenience, mobility, and accessibility rather than raw output. In practice, a small number of QT-RTGs can completely change how a player approaches exploration, especially when a setup needs reliable power in a compact form factor.
