Official description

Named after the evil dragon that dwells by the roots of the world tree, this sword heralds doom for those who cross its path.

Overview

Nidhögg is a sword weapon in Valheim, notable for its high slash damage and strong single-target burst on its alternate attack. It is a late-game melee weapon that scales through upgrades with Flametal and Asksvin Hide, with Charred Bone also required for the first and final upgrade steps.

Its primary attack is a three-hit sword combo, and the third strike deals double damage. This makes Nidhögg effective when you can commit to the full attack chain, especially against enemies that can be kept in place or staggered. The alternate attack is a powerful thrust that deals triple damage to the enemy directly in front of you. It has a 1-second windup, so timing and positioning matter, but the payoff is high burst damage against a single target.

Nidhögg’s upgrade path improves both damage and durability:

  • Quality 1: 135 slash damage, 200 durability, costs 3 Charred bone, 12 Flametal, and 2 Asksvin hide
  • Quality 2: 141 slash damage, 250 durability, costs 10 Flametal and 2 Asksvin hide
  • Quality 3: 147 slash damage, 300 durability, costs 20 Flametal and 4 Asksvin hide
  • Quality 4: 153 slash damage, 350 durability, costs 30 Flametal and 6 Asksvin hide
  • Total upgrade cost: 3 Charred bone, 72 Flametal, and 14 Asksvin hide

Because its attacks emphasize direct melee pressure rather than wide area control, Nidhögg is best used by staying close to enemies and taking advantage of openings. The alternate attack is especially useful for enemies in a straight line, while the main combo rewards players who can safely finish all three swings. For general combat, the weapon fits a playstyle that alternates between sustained pressure and deliberate burst strikes.
