Overview

The Silo is a farm building purchasable from Robin at the Carpenter's Shop. It takes two days to build, and once complete it automatically stores hay gathered from grass cut on the farm. Because it is inexpensive compared to most other farm buildings, it is often one of the first buildings a player buys, especially if they plan to raise animals.

Each silo can store up to 240 hay. Interacting with it shows the current amount stored, and if multiple silos are owned, the interaction display shows the combined total storage and capacity across all silos on the farm. The hay stored inside is made available through the hay hoppers inside Coops and Barns, where it is used to feed the animals housed there. The distance between the silo and the animal buildings does not matter for this function.

Hay can be added to a silo in several ways. When grass is cut on the farm with the scythe, there is a 50% chance of adding 1 hay to the silo; this rises to 75% with the Golden Scythe and 100% with the Iridium Scythe. Cutting weeds with a melee weapon enchanted with Haymaker also has a 33% chance to produce hay, which goes directly into the silo if possible, or into the inventory otherwise. Hay in the player’s inventory can also be deposited by left- or right-clicking the silo while holding it. Hay can likewise be added by clicking the hay hoppers while holding hay. Harvesting Wheat can also produce hay, but that hay goes into the player’s inventory rather than directly into the silo.

A few practical notes make silos especially useful:

  • A chest can be used to store hay instead of building more silos, either when hay is received as a gift from Marnie or withdrawn from the Hay Hopper before a Coop or Barn is fully upgraded. Hay can then be moved into a silo later if needed.
  • The amount of hay stored can also be checked at the Farm Computer.
  • Because grass stops growing and yields less hay on average in Winter, it is wise to cut enough grass in late fall to fill the silo or silos before the season ends.
  • To avoid buying hay in winter, a player needs 26 hay per animal for the season, since animals do not consume food during the Festival of Ice or the Feast of the Winter Star.
  • One silo can support 9 animals, so feeding a full Deluxe Barn and Deluxe Coop for the season requires 3 silos.
