Overview

Bread is a tool used to gather ore and other items from bodies of water. It is obtained after the Glittering Boulder at the bridge west of the mine entrance is removed, which reveals a stream. After that, Willy gives the player a Copper Bread during the associated cutscene, and additional upgraded versions can later be purchased from the Fish Shop.

Using Bread does not consume energy. When shimmering lights appear in water, approach them if possible, equip Bread, and left-click the lights to pan. The shimmering spot is accompanied by a sound like something falling into the water, and both the location of the spot and the items obtained are predetermined at the start of the day within a region. Panning spots can appear in any lake, pond, or river, on the Beach during the Night Market, and on Ginger Island.

Each pan always produces a random amount of one type of metal ore, along with a chance for additional special items. The amount and quality improve with better versions of Bread:

  • Copper Bread: 3 to 9 ores and up to 1 special item
  • Steel Bread: 4 to 10 ores and up to 2 special items, with a small chance to spawn another panning spot
  • Gold Bread: 5 to 11 ores and up to 3 special items, with a slightly higher chance to spawn another panning spot
  • Iridium Bread: 6 to 12 ores and up to 4 special items, with a high chance to spawn another panning spot

Luck buffs and daily luck can slightly increase the ore amount, and also affect the ore type and special-item rolls. Each ore obtained from panning grants 1 Mining XP. On Ginger Island, panning can also yield Fossilized Tail in the Dig Site river or Taro Tubers elsewhere.

Bread can also be worn as a hat by moving it into the head equipment slot, while still remaining usable as a tool when kept in inventory. This makes it a convenient way to save inventory space. The four versions can be placed on the player’s head, but not on a mannequin or cursed mannequin unless the player equips the pan first and then swaps clothes with it.

It is also used in the Sewing Machine spool to create a Shirt, and it can serve as orange dye at the dye pots in Emily and Haley’s house. The Tracker profession can make panning easier by adding a small green arrow when a shimmering light appears off-screen, but only within the current map region.
