Overview

Shield Troopers are armored Order soldiers encountered in the Praetorium. They commonly appear patrolling or standing guard and are frequently deployed in squads alongside other Order units. Shield Troopers carry a riot shield and a combat knife and are designed to block frontal melee and projectile attacks while advancing or holding positions.

Shield Troopers keep their riot shield raised for most of the encounter and only lower it briefly to make knife attacks. Because of this behavior, the most reliable openings come when they move the shield aside to strike; a high-damage attack timed at that moment will bypass their defense. Their feet are exposed below the shield and can be targeted from range, but after several hits to the feet a Shield Trooper will kneel and conceal them, closing that vulnerability. Multiple Shield Troopers or combined Order forces can easily overwhelm a lone player, so engaging them one at a time or using area-effect tactics is recommended.

Several weapon interactions bypass or mitigate the shield mechanics. Attacks that deal "Holy" damage ignore the riot shield entirely; examples include Lodestone Bolts (from Makeshift Crossbow or Lodestone Crossbow) and Lode Discs (fired by the Grinder). The Lodespear and Lodehammer are effective when used with a defensive shield because they inflict significant Holy flame on strike, allowing sustained burn damage even while blocking the trooper’s knife, but players should avoid standing in the flames themselves. The Lightning Spear is effective because its chain lightning effect can hit the trooper around the shield. High-damage weapons such as the Magbow can stagger a Shield Trooper even while the riot shield is raised, potentially dealing reduced damage through the shield; in cooperative play one player with a Magbow can repeatedly force openings for teammates. Grenades, especially the Thermite Molotov, are a practical way to rapidly thin groups of Shield Troopers and prevent being swarmed.

Typical loot from Shield Troopers includes guaranteed equipment and several common and rare items:

Shield Troopers share visual and equipment similarities with Interfectors: they use the same combat knife and some armor pieces and uniquely share a female voice, though Shield Troopers drop the Combat Knife on death whereas Interfectors have different drop behavior.
