Overview

Sedimentary Rock is a common extractable mineral in Oxygen Not Included used primarily as a basic construction material and as feed for certain critters. It has no special decor or thermal properties that distinguish it from other stone types and is generally considered a low-value rock best used where it is mined to avoid wasting duplicant travel time or consuming more valuable resources. Sedimentary Rock can be found in asteroids and other space Points of Interest (POIs), produced by processing Fossil in a Rock Crusher, consumed by Hatches to produce Coal, and converted into Sand by a Rock Crusher.

Sedimentary Rock appears as a harvestable resource on specific space POIs and on-world deposits. Rockets equipped with a Drillcone can collect material from POIs while the POI has remaining mass; POIs refill each cycle at a randomized hidden refill rate (between 1% and 2% of their max capacity per day) up to their randomized maximum capacity. When harvesting from POIs the gathered elements are collected at a fixed temperature independent of the POI, so material pulled from a POI can be very hot or very cold regardless of the planetoid environment. Sedimentary Rock can be harvested from Rocky Asteroid Fields and Gilded Asteroid Fields on rocket missions; observed harvest rates for these POIs are roughly 216–648 kg per cycle from Rocky Asteroid Fields and 135–405 kg per cycle from Gilded Asteroid Fields.

Production and conversion paths are straightforward. Crushing Fossil in a Rock Crusher yields Sedimentary Rock: 100 kg Fossil → 95 kg Sedimentary Rock + 5 kg Lime. Conversely, a Rock Crusher can grind Sedimentary Rock into Sand at a one-to-one mass conversion: 100 kg Sedimentary Rock → 100 kg Sand.

Sedimentary Rock has several gameplay interactions that make it useful in early or utility-focused builds:

  • Use Sedimentary Rock as on-site building material for tiles, ladders, or basic walls to conserve higher-value ores and save duplicant travel time. It is adequate for structural needs but is outclassed by specialized materials for heat conduction, insulation, or decor.
  • Hatches will eat Sedimentary Rock as feed. When fed Sedimentary Rock, Hatches (including Stone Hatches) excrete Coal, and feeding them increases the chance they will lay Stone Hatch eggs, making Sedimentary Rock useful for early coal production and Hatch breeding strategies.
  • Rock Crusher conversions allow flexible resource chains: use Fossil to make Sedimentary Rock (and a small amount of Lime), then either crush that Sedimentary Rock into Sand for glass and other recipes or leave it as construction rock.
  • Harvesting from space POIs is renewable: POIs refill over time, and rockets with Drillcones can collect the available mass; plan missions knowing each POI has a randomized maximum capacity and refill rate that are hidden.

Overall, Sedimentary Rock serves as a low-tier, versatile stone resource for construction, critter feeding, and intermediate processing rather than a high-value ore. Use it locally for economy and convert or process it when specific outputs such as Sand or Coal are needed.
