Sprinkle on a wild tree to ensure rapid growth, even in winter. Doesn't work on fruit trees.

Overview

Tree Fertilizer is a fertilizer that speeds up the growth of wild trees. It is applied after planting on a tree seed or sapling, not on bare ground, and it has no effect on Fruit Trees or Tea Bushes. The recipe is learned at Foraging level 7, and the item can be crafted at the Bone Mill. Each craft produces one Tree Fertilizer and it sells for 10g.

Once applied, fertilized seeds and saplings turn red until they mature. Most fertilized trees advance one growth stage each night until stage 4, then reach their final stage after two more nights. This makes Tree Fertilizer especially useful for quickly establishing wood sources or replanting trees in remote areas. Fertilized trees also continue growing in Winter, while unfertilized trees stop growing entirely during that season.

There are a few special cases. Mahogany Trees only have a 60% chance to advance each night even when fertilized, and Mystic Trees only have a 30% chance each night. Mushroom Tree saplings are an unusual exception as well: if Tree Fertilizer is placed on them during Winter, they become stumps the next day.

Because it is a tree-specific fertilizer, only one type of fertilizer can occupy a tile at a time, and Tree Fertilizer must be placed directly on the planted seed or sapling. Fertilizer stays in the soil until removed or the tile is reset, and unlike crop fertilizers it is not meant for general tilled soil use. The fertilized appearance also makes it easy to check which saplings have already been treated.

Tree Fertilizer can also be used in tailoring. It works in the spool of the Sewing Machine to create the dyeable High-Waisted Shirt, and it can be used as an orange dye item at the dye pots in Emily and Haley's house.

A few practical points:

  • Use it on wild tree seeds and saplings as soon as they are planted to speed up early growth.
  • It is most valuable in Winter, when untreated trees would otherwise stall completely.
  • It does not help Fruit Trees or Tea Bushes, so it should not be wasted on those.
  • Mahogany Trees and Mystic Trees still benefit from it, but they grow less reliably than other trees.
