Pigment of Imagination

Overview

Pigment acts each turn either to spawn Portraits (or replace any Portraits killed the previous turn) or to attack. If no Portrait was killed last turn she performs a 2 damage ranged attack. Each Portrait is assigned one-third of the pegboard corresponding to the column beneath it and is capable of transforming a small clump (about eight) of pegs in its column into dull pegs every turn. When a Portrait’s assigned column has no more pegs to dull it will perform a 4 damage ranged attack. When a Portrait is defeated all dull pegs in its column revert to regular pegs and the player receives 2 Spinfection; additionally, defeating Portraits releases a poisonous/spinfectious gas effect as part of the Portraits’ defeat behavior.
The fight’s core tactical challenge is balancing when to kill Portraits and when to focus Pigment herself. Portraits generate Spinfection every time they are killed and will repeatedly respawn if killed too often, so timing kills to roughly once every five turns keeps Spinfection manageable while minimizing incoming damage. Pigment herself is always targetable; use high single-target damage to pressure or kill her while using AOE effects or relics primarily to clear Portraits when needed.
Useful interactions and counters:
- Take advantage of dull pegs: peg-upgrading mechanics (for example, relics or effects that upgrade pegs) and slime synergies make the dull peg pattern advantageous. Abilities that benefit from repeated dull-peg bounces significantly increase damage output.
- Rubborb (and similar multi-bounce effects) performs very well here because it can repeatedly bounce between dull pegs and rack up extreme damage; combinations like
Splatorb plus
House of Slime can produce similar results.
- Ballwark and other defenses that mitigate Spinfection-related damage help survivability when Portraits must be killed frequently.
- Bramble can block Pigment’s movement and prevent her from spawning additional Portraits.
- Avoid relying on orbs or relics that do not count dull-peg hits for their benefits (Protectorb, Forbification,
Orbrasion and similar effects grant much less when the board has many dull pegs).
- Be cautious combining
Round Guard with effects that trade life for other benefits (for example,
Bad Cheese) because
Round Guard does not protect against Spinfection and such combinations can be lethal.
