Hardwood

Hardwood is a resource item used in several crafting, quest, and upgrade tasks. It is a sturdier form of wood that appears in multiple late-game systems, especially on Ginger Island and in village progression. Players will usually stockpile it rather than sell it, since several important objectives require large amounts at once.

Hardwood is needed for a number of notable repairs and requests, including Robin’s mail quest for 10 Hardwood, Robin’s Special Order for 80 Hardwood, Willy’s boat repair, the Giant Stump repair, and several Fish Pond capacity quests. It is also used for crafting the Hardwood Fence and for some other recipes unlocked through progression. Because the amounts requested can be high, keeping a reserve of Hardwood is useful once it becomes consistently obtainable.

It also has a few special utility uses:

• In tailoring, Hardwood can be used with Cloth in the Sewing Machine to create a clothing item, and it can also be used as a brown dye ingredient.
• In dyeing, it can be placed in the orange dye pot at Emily and Haley’s house.
• A Wood Chipper can convert Hardwood into Wood, Maple Syrup, Oak Resin, or Pine Tar.
• Putting a Cork Bobber into a Deconstructor yields 5 Hardwood.

Hardwood is especially valuable because many of its uses are one-time progression gates or large bulk requirements rather than small repeatable costs. That makes it a good idea to gather it whenever possible instead of spending it casually. Even after it becomes easier to obtain, Hardwood remains one of the resources most commonly set aside for island, fishing, and building-related goals.
