Concentrication

concentrication

Overview

Concentrication is a targeted offensive orb introduced in v0.7.27 that fires a high-damage, reticle-styled shot at a chosen direction. The orb’s visual and attack animation are based on an aiming reticle, and its name is a portmanteau of "concentric" and "concentration." The orb received several fixes and tweaks across versions: display and collision fixes (v0.7.34), prediction improvements (v0.7.52, v0.8.22), and an increase to attack animation speed (v0.8.5).

Concentrication functions primarily as a single-target, high-damage option that behaves unlike typical bouncing or area orbs. It is a targeted orb, so the player directly aims its shot. The orb does not benefit from Overflow or Pierce mechanics and is therefore unaffected by relics that grant piercing (for example, Overwhammer and Prime Rod of Frost do not change its behavior). Concentrication also does not inherently refresh the board, but its trajectory and interactions let it work well with refresh strategies.

  • Concentrication excels in Forest runs, where it has particularly favorable matchups against enemies such as Slime Boss and Avogadro. Because piercing orbs are not slowed by red slimy pegs, pairing Concentrication with pierce-capable effects on the same shot (from other sources) can enable exceptionally long, damaging shots.
  • The orb is a practical alternative to board-refresh solutions like Refreshircle. While it does not refresh pegs itself, it easily reaches Refresh Pegs and can bounce off refreshed pegs to extend shots, making it synergistic with relics and trinkets that increase Refresh Peg count (for example, PegBag and Fresh Bandana).
  • Alien's Rock provides strong synergy by adding multi-targeting to Concentrication’s powerful single-shot damage. With precise aiming, a single Concentrication shot augmented by Alien's Rock can defeat multiple Knights and Shield Knights.
  • Unicorn Horn improves aiming consistency without changing raw stats. Its aim-assist lasts longer with Concentrication because pegs that are pierced do not count as bounces for Unicorn Horn’s assist logic, allowing the orb to maintain a steadier aim window.
  • Concentrication and Lazorb share design similarities, but Lazorb’s much lower damage and lack of targeting make it not a strict upgrade. Concentrication remains the preferred choice when high single-shot damage and explicit aiming are desired.

Practical notes for use:

  • Prioritize precision aiming to take full advantage of the orb’s damage and synergy with multi-target relics.
  • Combine with refresh-heavy builds to create longer shot chains and revisit difficult peg clusters.
  • Avoid relying on Pierce or Overflow relics to modify Concentrication’s behavior; instead, use relics that add targeting, multi-hit, or refresh interactions.
  • Consider Concentrication as a primary damage source in Forest runs and as a complementary option in builds that need targeted, high-damage shots.
